CHAPTER SIX
TO MAISYâS abiding surprise and pleasure, she felt into a deep and dreamless sleep as soon as her head hit the pillow, and the following morning she was bounding around her room full of energy and enthusiasm.
And determined to see take what had happened last night for what it was. A quick kiss between a man and a woman, nothing moreâand certainly not a sensual act which had rocked the foundations of her world!
And which, she tried to convince herself, had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that this morning she spent much longer than usual checking her appearance!
Yesterday she had been so rushed that she had been at a definite disadvantageâespecially when confronted by the attractive but distinctly unfriendly Samantha Marsh. Today she intended to show the unit that she did not always resemble a scarecrow who was badly in need of a make-over!
She did nothing more dramatic than apply the merest lick of make-up, but she tamed the flaxen halo of her hair with two tortoise shell clips and wore one of her favourite shift dresses. It was a bright, buttercup yellow, made from a mixture of linen and silk, and while most of it didnât actually show as long as she had her white coat on the scooped neckline was very flattering beneath the severe and mannish lapels of her doctorâs uniform.
She added a string of amber beads and a matching pair of silver and amber earrings, which had been a birthday present from her brother and his wife, and stood back to survey herself in the mirror, pleased with the result.
Then, seeing that she had plenty of time before she was due in the clinic, she went down to the canteen, where she sat with a red-eyed Charlie who regaled her with detailed and gory stories of his surgical admissions throughout the night.
But Maisy had been surrounded by medicine all her lifeâand certainly long enough to be immune to distressing tales. Charlieâs blood-curdling stories did not spoil her appetite in the slightest!
She calmly ate a poached egg and wholemeal toast and drank gallons of good, strong black coffee, her equanimity shattered only by the sight of Matthew Gallagher joining the queue at the counter.
âIsnât there a special dining-room for consultants?â Maisy hissed, when she was sure that there was no chance of her boss hearing her.
Charlie followed the direction of her gaze and his mouth twisted as he watched the tall, dark consultant reach out and take a dish of fresh fruit. âSure there is,â he said with a scowl. âBut our super-dooper Aussie doesnât agree with what I understand he calls âsegregated socialisationâ. Consequently, he eats wherever takes his fancyâalthough I suspect it depends on whoever takes his fancy! He eats with the nurses sometimes. Quite a lot, in fact.â
Maisy found herself smiling as she dabbed at her mouth with her napkin and rose to her feet, determined to beat Matthew into work this morning. She rather liked the sound of a senior
